THE WRITER’S THEATRE by STUDIO GANG
There is a connection between the interiors and exteriors of a space created by various types of facades and materials. With modernization and the boldness of using raw materials as a new trend, a lot of artistic approaches have taken place throughout the globe. It is not just about functionality anymore, but it is also about aesthetics and transparency. Very few projects talk about the effects of the facades on interior spaces and the designs of interiors influenced by the space.
One such project which intrigued me was The Writers Theatre by Studio Gang in Glencoe, Illinois. Built in 2016, it is a cultural hub to bring together artists for performances and inspiration. The building is designed to create intimacy and connection between the performing artists and the audience. The use of light materials, not just physically but also visually, enhances the sense of transparency and privacy simultaneously.
The main attraction of this building is the use of wooden lattice timber truss which supports the canopy on the second floor. This truss was made in a fabrication studio where Ar. Jeanne Gang went herself and discussed the joinery details. They used natural grains of light wood timber and played around with its properties. These types of details are something to look forward to in this project. My focus in this research would be the effects of the elements used on interior space experience.
